Oh how words have changed. In years gone by, many people would purchase “used” cars, but not anymore. Now we buy “previously owned” vehicles. Buildings were remodeled but now they are re-purposed. And the one I heard recently was spoken by the famous Dr. Ruth Westheimer, who is more frequently simply known as “Dr. Ruth.”
In an interview with the 91 year old, she was asked, “Do you ever think about retiring?” She responded with, “I will never retire. I tell everybody not to retire, but to rewire.” She went on to speak about the loss of her husband 20 years ago, her children and her grandchildren, as well as her continued interest in people. While some of the ways in which she impacts people may differ from years past, she has no desire to just sit on a beach pampering herself. She wants to continue to have an influence.
As I get older, I see a number of individuals who long for that magical day when they can retire. The day arrives, they enjoy the momentary celebration – but then what? They may take an extended vacation, enjoying a well-deserved rest. But then what? Well, they might catch up on that stack of books they have been wanting to read and enjoy a non-hurried lunch with friends. But then what?
Before we have to ask ourselves, “But then what?” perhaps we should consider approaching our more seasoned years with the question of “How can I rewire?” How can I make a shift in what I am doing that continues to allow me to make a difference? You and what you have to offer are valuable, making this question worthy of your consideration.
