A recent article asked this question in a number of ways. It examined attempts that individuals have made to push their bodies to extremes. For example: the longest someone has been able to last without solid food was 382 days; or the most friends (not Facebook friends) a person can have is 150; or the longest someone has been able to go without sleep was 11 days.
Other questions regarding height, intelligence, and memory were also examined. But the bottom line on the article was that there are limits. Limits to how much weight a person can lift as well as how fast a person can run. Interesting facts, but what does this have to do with your relationships today?
While there are indeed extremes to how far we can push our bodies, there is no limit to how much we can love. Carl Sagan once said, “For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love.” What a powerful statement to consider. Whether we are contemplating the vastness of space, the limits of human kind, or the absolute evils that exist in the world – we can address them – with love.
My life is bearable because the God of the universe extends His grace and redeems my life with His love. My life is bearable when I have a wife who loves me as she loves herself. My life is bearable when I extend myself to embrace and love my kids, help my co-workers, take care of an aging parent.
Today’s tip – improve your significant relationships this week, as well as your own life, by actively concretely demonstrating unselfish love. Start right now.
