You may think this a strange question. But I would really be curious to know. You see laughter is so easily lost. I mean, life is serious stuff – there are wars and rumors of wars (hmm), hurricanes, wildfires, political divide, and the list goes on and on. You might think, “What is there to laugh about?” But God didn’t create us just to be “sad sacks.” Certainly we are to take serious things seriously. But He also created us for laughter. I think about being with some friends this past weekend. We played a variety of games together and connected by simply laughing and having fun together.
But what about our most significant relationship – the one with our mate? Is laughter important in that relationship? You bet it is. Let me mention just a few of the benefits.
- Humor can help you through stressful times. Yes, there are tears at times, but finding humor can be found in nearly every situation. And lightening the mood can oftentimes provide a helpful lift when it is most needed.
- Laughter together promotes playfulness and friendship. Many researchers have found that this kind of friendship promotes longevity in the relationship.
- Turning tense moments into lighter ones, using appropriate humor, can lead to fewer fights and increase our bonding as a couple.
So, next time things are about to take a negative turn in a discussion, try to find the humorous side of things. Sometimes being able to laugh at ourselves, is the best medicine we can take.
