In my last three installments, I have been examining some of the reasons that people claim not to believe in God. Some of these reasons range from not wanting to be responsible to an Almighty being to not wanting to have to think that hard about such a weighty matter. But I want to emphasize – if there is a God, then there is an awful lot at stake – including our eternity. You see, my choice to believe or not believe something does not change reality, no matter how much I want it to.
There have been numerous, very intelligent individuals, who have been avowed atheists, and, almost with hostility, set out to disprove God’s existence. Three of these modern-day naysayers have been, apologist Josh McDowell, the Chicago newspaper journalist Lee Stroble, and the famous author, C.S. Lewis. They each set out on a quest to disprove God’s existence and the truths of the Bible. However, in each case, they wound up concluding the exact opposite. McDowell eventually wrote “Evidence that Demands a Verdict;” Stroble – “The Case for Christ;” and Lewis would go on the author “Mere Christianity.” These individuals were not afraid to think hard, and they were willing to change their lives based upon objective truth. And best of all, they know their present and future are secure.
Certainly, it sounds eclectic to talk about being “one with the universe.” But I’m not quite sure how a person becomes one with – planets, stars, and gaseous matter. But when you know the One who created the universe – then you’re onto something – something that is life changing.
If you are one who is searching, I pray you will be courageous and embrace intellectual honesty, regardless of where it lands who.
