I feel as though I am in the weeds today. What do I mean by that? Do you ever plan your day or your week, expecting to make great headway on your meaningful and significant goals – only to get derailed? Perhaps you are checking your email and you come across one that winds up taking much longer to address than you anticipated. Or you have to return a phone call, only to find yourself on hold in an automated quagmire.
A couple of weeks ago, I found that I couldn’t receive any emails because of a storage issue. It took me six hours over the course of two days to get the issue resolved. It ultimately was a relatively simple fix, but it was more than challenging to find the right person who knew the answer. Had I budgeted six hours of my week, planning for that task? Absolutely not! It felt like a frivolous waste of time that was taken away from more important plans. I felt lost in the weeds.
The question is – what do you do when this occurs? I had several choices: I could get angry and stomp my feet; I could stress out about the situation and watch my blood pressure rise; I could yell at the customer service people I was dealing with; and maybe worst of all, I could give up on getting anything accomplished for the entire week, just because I was delayed.
It’s kind of like a golfer who hits the ball in the weeds. He can either takes his clubs and go home or he can play from there to get back on the fairway and to the green. My encouragement to you is to recognize that sometimes God allows us to get in the weeds to remind us that we are not always in control. It is particularly at those times that we need to trust Him and play back towards the green. Keep the goal in sight – even when you are in the weeds.
