I frequently see people stuck, particularly when it comes to “purpose.” They may have made some missteps in their journey thus far, which may have convinced them that they are a failure and have nothing to offer mankind. While that seems bleak and perhaps a little extreme, that is where many go. And when they do, it takes them out of the game. Satan loves it when that happens.
Looking backward, whether we do so to examine where we have come from or to assess our mistakes and what we have learned, is important for the future. But its importance is in how it shapes us for moving forward – not to paralyze us with fear and guilt.
Taking an honest look at who we are, where we have been, where we have blown it, what we have learned, and where we have soared, can give us a more accurate picture of our strengths our desires, and even, perhaps, our calling.
Professor William Damon, PhD, from Stanford University, adds, “Purposeful people look ahead to goals they seek to accomplish over the long haul. The psychological benefits of purpose lie in strengths that forward-looking commitments bring: motivation, energy, achievement, hope, and resilience.”
Today’s message is this – if we will examine our past in order to better understand ourselves, we will be equipped to live out our best lives yet. God will author our purpose, which can be exciting, if we will only trust him and allow Him to.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding: in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
Happy New Year!
