People perceive us in a variety of ways. We may have a stellar reputation for quality work. Perhaps people think of you and they see someone who is always running late. Or maybe when you come to mind, other people’s thoughts go to – lazy, dependable, giving, selfish, caring, handicapped, lonely, grieving, and so on.
I have a friend named Al. I have probably known Al for 20 years. I have known him as a kind man, a devoted husband, and a music lover. However, in recent years I have also come to know him as very sick. He has had upwards of 50 surgeries, all kinds of infections, joints replaced, and now is even battling cancer. So, how do you think I would know Al now? Actually, that all depends on Al. Because he loves the Lord and depends on Him, it definitely colors Al’s view of the world and in turn how I see him.
You see, Al doesn’t focus on his pain and limitations. He chooses to look at his family, his friends, and the various ways he has been blessed. Now you may be thinking – “Blessed – are you kidding me? He is a very sick man. Where are the blessings?” I can promise you, if you talked to Al he would tell you. So, with all that being said, how is Al known? He is known to be an encourager. As I go to comfort him, he winds up encouraging me. How cool is that.
So, this week I urge all of us to ponder, “How are You Known?”
