I must confess that I was somewhat baffled by a recent psychology article concerning factors that make life meaningful. The article stated that there are three factors – 1) Coherence (the feeling that life makes sense), 2) Purpose (having goals to work towards), and 3) Mattering (the feeling that life has value and makes a difference).
One psychologist stated that the last factor, “mattering,” might be the most crucial. They said they weren’t sure why participants felt their lives mattered but that it might result from their “believing in God.”
Ok, I am working hard to contain any snarky comments. But can’t help but be a bit caught off guard by their surprise that God might be at the root of “mattering.” I would contend that the presence of a living God is what gives meaning to all three of their stated factors. In other words, where does my feeling come from that life makes sense? Only from the presence of the Creator of life who makes sense out of it. Where do I get my sense of purpose and having goals to work toward? Only from the presence of a living God who gives us purpose in being alive. And why do I have value and can make a difference? Because God says I have value and He gives me the strength and ability to make a difference.
