You may be thinking to yourself, “That’s a silly question. Everyone knows that eternal life is heaven.” And while I would agree that it is a reference to it, I believe it is so much more.
This was reinforced for me when, on a recent Sunday, I had the privilege of hearing Pastor Matt Heard teach. He was exploring the passage of Jesus’ encounter with the woman at the well. Hopefully that is a familiar story. In this meeting, He discusses Living Water and how it quenches the thirsts that life presents. Matt went on to ask the question, “What do you think of when you consider eternal life?” Most people thought of heaven.
But then Matt pointed out something interesting. He noted that “eternal” is an adjective that indicates quantity and “life” is a noun that can be associated with quality. For so many people, life is viewed as drudgery and difficult and some thing to endure. Feelings of needing to gut it out are often prevalent. So, when you think about it, you might ask the question, “If life is that hard, why would I want to do that forever – eternally?” You wouldn’t. But what if you saw life as a gift and something to be enjoyed to the fullest, in spite of your circumstances? Hmm. Something to consider.
This is one of the reasons I wrote the book “Who Are You?” It contains 12 stories of surrender, messiness, determination, and faith. These individuals all faced seemingly overwhelming struggles that could have led them to consider life as something to be endured. Yet, each of them has instead embraced life.
Maybe it’s time we took a different look at how we live life now and into eternity.
