“It has been about 15 years since I worked with a middle school student who loved football. He wasn’t doing well in school, which actually made him ineligible to play on a school sports team. You would think that this would have motivated him to focus more on his academics so that he would have the opportunity to play. However, he saw no need for it,
He was convinced that he was going to play for the Denver Broncos when he grew older because, well, that is what he wanted. He carried a football around school all the time. One item I have failed to mention, which might be important, is that this student was shorter than others in his grade level, and he probably weighed 50 lbs. soaking wet.
What do you think this young man was known for? I guess it depends on what your relationship was to him. Teachers knew him as a student who invested little effort into his academics. Coaches knew him as the kid who carried a football around but who would get broken in half if he ever tried to actually play the game. And his fellow students knew him as their peer – who threw a football around and talked about the Broncos all the time.
We all want to be known for something. Perhaps for you it is for having: a clean car; possessing an organized and well-maintained house; parenting well-behaved children; or being the most humorous person among your friends.” (Excerpt from the “Who Are You”)
