You may be thinking, “Playing what for?” So, allow me to ask the question a bit differently. Who are you living for? Now in this “enlightened” age, I might get a variety of answers – “I live for my kids or my grandkids;” “I live to hear the approval and applause from others;” or “I used to live for the approval of others but now I have learned that it’s all about me, so now I need to live to please myself.”
But I ask again – Who are we doing all this stuff called “life” for?
The Denver Broncos had renewed hope this season when they acquired a Super Bowl winning quarterback in Russell Wilson. While Coloradans have had high hopes for the team, they had a disappointing season. And fair or unfair, Wilson has taken a lot of criticism. Yet, he seems focused and unfazed by it. How can he not let the ridicule get to him? It may have to do with who he is playing for.
Wilson was recently interviewed by the Denver Gazette following the Bronco’s victory in London. When asked about how he is able to deal with people’s criticism of him, he replied, “People are going to come and go. They’re going to love you one day and hate you the next. I think the best thing you can do is give God the glory and worship him – worship him through my play, worship him in my community by serving.” I play for him [God] and I play for my teammates.”
This is a man of faith who has clearly figured out that life is about giving God the glory by how he plays and his teammates the credit for their play. Life is about honoring God and serving others. That’s good advice.
