Walking down a side street in New Orleans, my wife and I came across a sign outside of a restaurant that was a tad unusual. While most would advertise their “great food in a fine dining experience,” this one was different. The sign stated that the food was disappointing, the drinks were not all that cold, and the service was less than stellar. Now I realize that this was a novel ploy designed to get one’s attention – which it did. However, it also highlighted for me the fact that regardless of how much we want to be better than everyone else, we are flawed and imperfect human beings. We don’t have it all together.
We live in an age where people have a very difficult time acknowledging this simple but dreaded fact. But why? Why do we strive to give the appearance that we are unflawed individuals? Because if I can somehow prove that I “have it all together.” Then I don’t need anyone – including God.
Mankind has exhibited a history of wanting to be in control. We have tried to reject God, ignore Him, relegate Him to the corner, lecture Him, demand fairness of Him – anything but accept Him. And yet, God is, and He is in control.
This above is an excerpt taken from Living on Purpose: Knowing God’s Design For Your Life. It is a reminder that I frequently need – as it is easy to live life foolishly acting as though I am in control of my world. But that can change on a dime. Fortunately, I don’t have to be in charge – especially when I know the One who is! As the old song says, “He’s got the whole world in His hands.” Indeed He does!
