What??? I know – that was my reaction too. I mean, I know there are new phone apps for just about everything under the sun – but birth control? You’ve got to be kidding!
A 2016 study from the journal “Archives of Sexual Behavior” reported some interesting findings regarding millennials and their sexual behaviors. While many believe that the younger generation is the most sexually active to date, this new study sheds interesting light on that assumption. While I wish that I could say that the decrease in sexual activity among singles is because of a newfound appreciation for “saving oneself” for a future marriage relationship – that is not the case. You see, the same decrease in sexual activity is evident in the relationships of both marrieds and singles. But why?
While I shouldn’t be surprised, as I have written more this year about the phenomenon, one of the culprits is – text messaging. Researchers attribute some of the decrease in sexual relations to the increased use of technology. I must confess that as I read this, I was a bit dumbfounded. On the one hand, if there are fewer high school pregnancies because of texting – then let’s go for the unlimited data plan. However, if marriages are experiencing decreased intimacy because of the interference of technology, we might need to reread the “Rules for Engagement” that I wrote about back on August 8th.
So – no profound words – just this reminder – make sure that today, and every day, your partner – your most important relationships, take precedence over your phone, i-pad, computer, television, and any other technology. Put the people standing in front of you first.
